BANBURY COUNSELLING ROOM

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What exactly happens in a counselling session?

Think of it as a mental and emotional tune-up. You talk, I listen (really listen), and together we work through what’s weighing on you. No judgment, no clipboard clichés—just a genuine conversation with someone trained to help.

Do I need to have a “serious” problem to come to counselling?

Not at all. You don’t need to be falling apart to benefit from therapy. If something’s bothering you—even if you can’t quite put your finger on it—we can explore it together. Think of it as preventative care for your emotional well-being.

How do I book a session?

You can book by sending me a message via my website, text or email.

I’ve had a bad experience with therapy before. What makes this different?

During Therapy

What should I expect in my first session?

It’s like a meet-and-greet for your mental health. We’ll chat about what brings you in, your goals, and any concerns. No pressure to spill your life story in 50 minutes—we’ll go at your pace.

Can I bring up more than one issue in therapy?

Yes, please do. Life doesn’t usually give us one problem at a time. Whether you’re juggling stress, self-doubt, relationship stuff, or all of the above—we’ll make space for it.

Will you give me advice or tell me what to do?

Not exactly. I’m not a life coach with a megaphone. My job is to help you hear yourself more clearly, spot patterns, and find your own direction—with a few gentle nudges if you’re stuck.

Can we include creative tools like journaling or mindfulness in therapy?

Absolutely! If traditional talk therapy feels a bit stuffy, we can mix it up. Journaling, breathing exercises, mindfulness—you name it. Therapy doesn’t have to be all heady talk; it can be experiential and reflective, too.

Logistics & Confidentiality

How long does therapy take?

It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. Some people feel better after a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support. Think of it like going to the gym—change takes time, but progress is real.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, with very rare legal exceptions (like serious risk to safety). See my Privacy Policy here

What’s your cancellation policy?

Life happens—I get it. Just give me 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel. Late cancellations or no-shows will incur a fee.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes! Cosy therapy from your sofa, car, or home office is available. I use secure video platforms, so we can connect safely.

About My Practice

What types of therapy do you offer?

I use an integrative approach, blending Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Person Centred and Solution Focused. Translation: we’ll use what works best for you, not a script.

How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?

Let’s find out together. The first session is an assessment where we get to know each other and you get a feel for how I work.

Do you work with couples and individuals?

Yes, I work with both. Whether you’re flying solo or coming in as a dynamic duo (with or without conflict), I’m here to help you strengthen connection and navigate the tricky stuff.

How much do you charge?

Individuals £60 / Couples £80 for 50 minutes

Supervision for Counsellors £60 for 60 mins / £90 for 90 mins
